2016: The Movie (Film Trailer, 2016)

Well, I’ve seen it all folks! This might be the funniest trailer I’ve seen in a while, one that completely fooled me into thinking it could be a real movie (at least for the first minute of a 3 minute video). Who knew these amateurs could start to look so professional? Not that I would know anything about being an amateur…. Just saying tho, going pro is kinda hard. (And yes, I’m looking for freelance writers for this site. Feel free to email a sample!) This trailer really sums up one weerd as year. And yes, I spelled weerd wrong. I like my way of spelling it better. Probably will save an immigrant’s life one day! But the real question is, was 2016 really a horror story? Or was it a comedy? Starts to feel a little too much like a David Lynch film… which is what this trailer is not. Not that that is a bad thing or anything. The editing is a little obvious, just a few flash cuts mixed with a strobing …

Logan (Film Trailer, 2017)

This is the X-Men right? The supposed punching bag of all the superhero franchises, owned and despised by Fox?   Get real…   For once a superhero film seems to really be going for something beyond the mainstream Marvel template and reaching for poetic magnitude. It’s a common trailer by now; just a series of clips from the film set to a slow tuned cover song sung by a women, and yet the trope is pretty damn powerful.     What’s especially emotive about this trailer is the ending, with the camera centering on a little girl holding Wolverine’s arm in symbol of strength and love, a paradox that nicely sums up the whole arc of many people’s favorite superhero.   I’m want to delve into snark with this trailer review and yet I can’t bring myself to poke fun at a trailer at least trying to showcase a superhero film that seems to be about more than the beat em up and defeat bad guy stereotype. This trailer is really pushing Logan as …

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (film trailer, 2016)

Part of me dreads the very idea of reviewing a film trailer. Honestly, calling this art is like scraping the bottom a desk for a piece of gum to call food. I just don’t want to do it. But there’s this nagging desire to challenge myself–one that motivates me to write this blog. Plus, I think this flash fiction of a film might be one of the greatest trailers I’ve ever seen in a long time. I’d even wager it’s up there with the greatest trailer of my generation. Man, that two minute film was far more rewarding and emotional than David Fincher’s supposed masterpiece. I hope to god that isn’t the case with Rogue One. But you know what, I’m cool with it if it is. Because truthfully, this two minute work of, sigh, art is going to make Felicity Jones an all out star. And much like it did with Daisy Ridley, will have more to do with her unconventional beauty and toughness that is all but missing from the Star Wars my generation grew up with–that being the being …
