Relaxation. That is why America felt during that special halftime performance on Sunday’s historic Super Bowl.
The prediction was that Lady Gaga was going to get a little political during her performance, most likely rallying against the ever prescent President Donald Trump, perhaps to the delight of the too eager to protest liberals (I hesitate to use the more proper term “Democrats” in honor of the few democrats I know that have common sense). But the reality was there was no protest, save for an opening performance of “This Land is Your Land” smashed against “America the Beautiful” and a clip of the bridge from “Born This Way” (my least favorite Gaga song by the way, tho that’s neither here nor there).
The popular narrative so far has been that Gaga gave a subtle dig at Mike Pence, who was in the audience for the performance, which is spot on but also misses the bigger picture of the performance.
Another one seems to be that Gaga caved in to producers who begged her not to go the route of Beyonce ala last year’s performance, where Bea and her team of dancers dressed in Black Panther gear as a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement and as a middle finger to corrupt police officers in America. Again, I reject this notion. When has Gaga ever caved into the demands of the public at large (don’t believe me, just Google her meat dress and egg shell).
I think Gaga was on to something. And that something was that America needed to smile and enjoy themselves without succumbing to their most basic instincts. Yes, Donald Trump is president. And yes, despite the #NeverTrump movement, this man is not getting impeached anytime soon. Much like the Republicans who went on witch hunts trying to pin the ever controversial and horny Bill Clinton for a lie, the reality is Mr. Trump has not done anything wrong in our country, tho he has begun something pretty damn unpopular among white educated folks. And face it, uneducated white folks in America made their voices loud and clear this election. They are the minority, and dammit, they proved the founding fathers correct. The minority voice won’t be ignored. True minorities should take note of this.
And that is what made Gaga’s performance so damn special. She literally just jumped off the roof of the NRG Stadium, suspended by some pretty strong cables, and landed on to a stage and literally sang her heart out while teasing the audience with those naturally delicious legs. It was spectacular and bold, perhaps a little too much for my own tastes, and yet just what millennials and baby boomers are craving. Give us sugar, and please make it sweet.
And please, leave out the damn protests. Until liberals prove that election was rigged, just shut up. Donald Trump is our president. Deal with it. And donate to the ACLU while you’re at it. They’re the real dogs in this fight now.
