The first issue of Black Panther might be my elixir. Just when I’m on the verge of cancelling my Marvel unlimited plan, I took the plunge and actually bought a new comic. It felt awesome to go to my local comic shop and finally get to shoot the shit with the owner, a guy with dyed blond long hair and a black pull on you goatee beard. I’ve talked to him in the past but have had nothing to share through a meaningful exchange with him. I really don’t know much about comics, though I can proudly whispher who Alex Ross and Joseph Campbell.
But now I’m a new man and though not quite a nerd not yet a bro. And I think I’ve found a kindred spirit. It’s nice to have someone to talk to about this ever expanding subject matter. Someone who doesn’t gush over every sentence in his unadorned love for superheroes.
No, we talked about how comics are on the decline. It was a conversation tinged with melancholy, but the dude seemed pretty secure about it all. And the more I think about it, I don’t want to speculate about the well-being of his business. He’s been running his store for 30 years. As a fellow business owner, you learn to embrace the risk.
